Most hanging strops feature two components. The canvas (or linen) side is used first to clean the microscopic edge of any oxidation or lather residue while slightly warming the steel. The leather side provides the final realignment and polish for a smooth, sharp shave.

High-carbon steel naturally develops a dark 'patina' as it reacts to air and moisture. This is a sign of authenticity and can help protect against destructive red rust. However, to keep it pristine, you must apply protective blade oil after every use.

Keep your strop in a dry place away from sunlight. To prevent the leather from drying out and cracking, rub a tiny amount of non-abrasive yellow strop paste or leather balm into the smooth side with the heel of your hand every few months.
